  2. Exposition

Matthew 24:4–5 (ESV)

Jesus’ teaching on the last days begins and ends with a warning about deception (see Matthew 24:2–4, Matthew 24:23–27 come before the Son of Man returns in glory (Matthew 24:4–28, Matthew 24:29–32).1 All human beings seek to avoid suffering and thus when suffering happens we are tempted to look for people who promise an end to suffering in some way.2 A desire for glory in the present means that disciples will always be susceptible to deception by false teachers (see 2 Thessalonians 2:1–2; 2 Timothy 3:1–9).
