Lamentations 3:55–57 (ESV)

55 “I called on your name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit;

Like the two previous songs, this one also ends with a prayer. In some translations, this prayer looks like a prayer of thanksgiving for help that the Lord has already given. (For example: “You heard my voice… You came near when I called you”). But it may be more accurate to translate this prayer as a prayer of supplication. The prophet is still pleading with the Lord to help him.

Jeremiah still uses the image of the well. He is close to death (in “the depths of the pit”) and he calls on the name of the Lord (Yahweh). This name refers to God who has always done mighty deeds to rescue his people. On this name, Jeremiah puts his hope.

Jeremiah pleads with the Lord not to close his ears to his prayers (verse 44). He needs the Lord to be close to him and to say once again to him: do not fear (see Jeremiah 1:8, Jeremiah 1:17)
