26 He strikes them for their wickedness in a place for all to see,

God does not soften his punishments for people of high rank. He punishes them like common criminals, where everyone can see them. (Think, for example, of the sudden and shameful deaths of Queen Jezebel (2 Kings 9:30–37) and Haman (Esther 7:1–10).)
