He identifies himself as the God who is alive, real, and actually exists, in contrast to idols who have no existence other than in people’s minds (see Psalm 115:4–8; Psalm 135:15–18; Isaiah 44:10–20; Jeremiah 10:3–5). The “living one” sees, hears, saves, etc. (see Psalm 115:3, Psalm 115:9; Psalm 135:5–14; Isaiah 44:6–8; Jeremiah 10:6–16). John needs to know, then, that he’s not dealing with a concept or a doctrinal proposition, but with a living, actual God!
