Worse than the destruction of houses, the deportation of their people, the shame brought on their women, the famine, and the forced labour, was seeing the desolation of Mount Zion. This is where the Lord had established his dwelling place and his fame (Psalm 48:2). Now it was a heap of rubble where jackals looked for food. Jeremiah and the faithful remnant could not stop crying and became sick with grief as they looked at the place where God’s presence used to dwell.
