1. Revelation 2:18 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is the significance of the reference here to the Son of God?

Revelation 2:18 (ESV)

18 “And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: ‘The words of the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze.

Though the designation is well known from other Scriptures (e.g., Luke 1:35; Luke 3:38; Matthew 14:33; Matthew 16:16; Matthew 17:5; Romans 1:4), this is the only place in the Revelation shown to John where the term Son of God appears, though it is implicit in Revelation 1:6. This title appears here in preparation for the references later in the letter to Psalm 2:1–12, where the anointed King is my Son (Psalm 2:7).
