These words are borrowed from Psalm 2:1–12. But for readers from Thyatira there was undoubtedly an extra significance to these words as pottery was the carry-all basket for so many trades. Everybody knew that breaking an earthen pot was too easy, especially if you swing an iron rod against such a pot. The dominance of the iron rod over the earthen pot characterizes the way those who conquer would dominate over the peoples of Thyatira who now sought their success from heathen gods.
