1. Matthew 1:1–25 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What does Joseph’s swiftness to do as the angel commanded suggest?

Matthew 1:24 (ESV)

24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife,

There seems to be no hesitation on Joseph's part to obey the Lord. Joseph accepted the instruction in his dream because he knew that what he heard was the very Word of God. This man whom Matthew calls “just” shows himself to be a true son of David, a man after God’s own heart. His obedience is to the Lord, and it is immediate. He is concerned about the name, honour, and reputation of the child to be born. This child must not enter the world with a blemished name. He must not be born out of wedlock. He needs to be known as the son of Joseph of Nazareth, the carpenter, who is lawfully the son of David.
