Proverbs 11:2 (ESV)

2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.

Pride blinds us, but humility makes us wise to see things clearly. In Isaiah 2:1 – 4:6 we have a very clear example of the disgrace that is brought through pride. The men of Judah were proud of their horses and chariots, instead of trusting in the Lord. Their wives and daughters went around proudly in the streets, wearing expensive clothes and jewellery and even wearing crescent necklaces, which symbolized the worship of the moon god (Isaiah 3:18). But God announced through Isaiah, “For the LORD of hosts has a day against all that is proud and lofty, against all that is lifted up.... The haughtiness of man shall be humbled, and the lofty pride of men shall be brought low, and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day” (Isaiah 2:12, Isaiah 2:17).

That day came when the Babylonians made war against Judah and took them into exile. Then the perfumes were replaced with stench and dirt, the sashes with ropes, the fine hairstyles with baldness, the fine clothing with sackcloth, and the beauty with shame (Isaiah 3:24). Pride always leads to a fall. Those who humble themselves and repent from their sin are truly wise.
