The gospel message includes the exciting prospect of the Saviour’s blessed return to this earth and the renewal of all things. That expectation contributes greatly to the enthusiasm the young Christian has for the gospel. The challenges and distractions of life can too easily divert the Christian's gaze from the expectation of Christ’s return, and lead to his Christian life losing all its drive and zeal. The Christian is obliged to rekindle that eager watchfulness for the Saviour’s return and live in a fashion consistent with the glorious expectation. The Lord’s promise to come like a thief
is intended to prompt renewed alertness.
