Memucan warned that the aftermath of Vashti’s disobedience did not lie far off in the future, but that it would be felt that very day.
Women from all over the empire had attended Vashti’s banquet. And usually, women are eager to follow in the footsteps of a queen! With such a threat to family life, the stability of the empire itself would be threatened.
Again, Memucan’s words show sharp political insight. The battle of the sexes has been part of human experience since the fall of Adam and Eve. Only with the light of the gospel can this age-old battle be resolved. Without that light, women’s efforts for justice usually bring more discord, rather than true justice.
18 This very day the noble women of Persia and Media who have heard of the queen’s behavior will say the same to all the king’s officials, and there will be contempt and wrath in plenty.
