Esther 4:4 (ESV)

4 When Esther’s young women and her eunuchs came and told her, the queen was deeply distressed. She sent garments to clothe Mordecai, so that he might take off his sackcloth, but he would not accept them.

The king’s wives clearly lived an isolated life. While the whole of Susa was bewildered about the news of the edict, Esther was not even aware of it. Her maids and eunuchs, conscious of her close acquaintance with Mordecai, told her of Mordecai’s distress. Wanting to know what the cause of his mourning was, she sent him other clothes so that he would be able to enter the palace grounds.
