Of course, the greatest happiness was that felt by the Jews. Again, our attention is drawn to a sharp contrast. Only three months ago, the Jews went through great mourning,
with fasting and weeping and lamenting
(Esther 4:3). Now there were light and gladness and joy and honor.
Three months ago, all the people in the empire had been encouraged to despise the Jews. Now they had a new position: one of honour. They were people who enjoyed the favour and protection of the king.
