On a number of occasions in Scripture, this word occurs in tandem with Canaanites
(Genesis 13:7; Genesis 34:30; here in Judges 1:4–5). The Perizzites’ exact identity has remained uncertain. In the cases where the term occurs in conjunction with Canaanites,
it simply appears to refer to a major component of Canaan’s population.1
