What was Israel’s responsibility within the covenant?

Judges 2:2 (ESV)

2 and you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall break down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed my voice. What is this you have done?

There were two parts to their responsibility. They were not to make a covenant with the Canaanites by either enslaving or marrying them. And they were not to allow the Canaanites altars to remain standing.
