It would appear as if the apostle is now absolutely sure of his return to Philippi. In the following lines, however, it becomes clear that this is not so certain (Philippians 1:27 mentions two possibilities: coming or not coming). Accordingly, we ought to read Philippians 1:26 as an enthusiastically worked-out possibility. If Paul remains alive and, furthermore, is allowed to spend time with the Philippians again, how grateful they will be to Christ for him! In other words, Paul’s remaining will not only be useful to them, but it will also give them reason to praise and give thanks.1
26 so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again.
