The mention of the boundaries of his inheritance
is an allusion to Joshua 19:49–50, which records how the Israelites, as a way of honouring Joshua, gave him a portion of land in the territory of Ephraim, as his personal inheritance. That passage also says that Joshua built up the town and settled there,
which would have been an example to Israel. Thus, Joshua himself had gone to take possession of the land,
as he later instructed the Israelites to do (Judges 2:6).1
9 And they buried him within the boundaries of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash.
