These may have been idols that Eglon set up at that site, in which case they would no doubt have prompted Ehud into actions. Or they may have been the pillar of stones that Joshua set up as a memorial (Joshua 4:1–8, Joshua 4:20). Likely, however, these stones were set up by Moab, maybe as a sign of Moab’s presence in the land.
