For a friendship to remain healthy, it is necessary to “cover over” those offences and sins that are committed in any relationship. To keep bringing them up will only harm the relationship and eventually cause estrangement. Let us rather look to the example that God himself gives us. He is willing to “cover” our sin (Psalm 32:1), never think of them again (Isaiah 43:25), and cast them into the depths of the sea (Micah 7:19). He who knows himself to be living out of God’s forgiving grace day by day will not be one to repeat past offences committed by others.

9 Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends.
