There are different ways to divide up this song of Deborah and Barak. It can be divided up into five parts.

  1. Judges 5:2–8, which have an initial call to praise and a cause for praise, which is the Lord's intervention for his people.

  2. Judges 5:9–13, which have a second call to praise and a cause for praise, for the Lord’s gift of volunteers for the battle.

  3. Judges 5:14–18, concerning the tribes who did or did not participate in the battle.

  4. Judges 5:19–23, which describe the battle and pronounce the curse on Meroz for not taking part.

  5. Judges 5:24–31, which include the blessing of Jael, the words of Sisera’s mother, and a curse on all God’s enemies and a blessing on all who love him.1
