1. Judges 5:14–18 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Does the poem differ from the prose account regarding the number of tribes involved in the coalition against Sisera?

Judges 5:14–18 (ESV)

14 From Ephraim their root they marched down into the valley, following you, Benjamin, with your kinsmen; from Machir marched down the commanders, and from Zebulun those who bear the lieutenant’s staff;

On the surface it seems that chapter Judges 5 differs from Judges 4 on this point. Judges 4:1–24 mentions only Naphtali and Zebulun (Judges 4:6, Judges 4:10), while the poem adds Ephraim, Benjamin, Machir, and Issachar (Judges 5:15).
