Ezra 1:1–10:44 (ESV)

1 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and also put it in writing:

The book of Ezra can be divided into two halves according to the two missions that God’s people receive in the book:

  1. The return and reestablishment of Jews to Judah in order to build the house of worship (Ezra 1:1 – 6:22);

  2. Ezra’s task to appoint magistrates and judges to administer justice and to teach the law of God and the law of the king (Ezra 7:1 – 10:44)
