During his life on earth Jesus joined many people in a meal (see Luke 9:10–17; Luke 11:37; Luke 15:2). Jesus, though, has bodily ascended into heaven and so no longer joins a dinner table on earth. He has promised, however, to join his people in celebration at his return (Revelation 19:9; Luke 14:15). The Lord’s Supper celebrated repeatedly in the New Testament church foreshadows the meal that Christ will eat with his people in the New Jerusalem.
20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.
