The eight groups listed comprised the original inhabitants of Canaan before the Hebrew conquest (Exodus 3:8, Exodus 3:17; Exodus 13:5; Exodus 23:23, Exodus 23:28; Deuteronomy 7:1; Deuteronomy 20:17; Joshua 3:10; Joshua 9:1; Joshua 12:8; Judges 3:5; 1 Kings 9:20). Only the Ammonites, Moabites, and Egyptians were still existing in the post-exilic period (2 Chronicles 8:7; Nehemiah 9:8).1
