Haggai appears to have been well known. He is always identified as the prophet
(e.g., Ezra 6:14; Haggai 1:1, Haggai 1:3, Haggai 1:12), but the Bible does not give any information about his ancestry. The book of Haggai was written by this prophet. He began his prophetic ministry on August 29, 520 BC and continued until December 18, 520 BC.1 Haggai was particularly concerned that the people had spent much time rebuilding their homes rather than rebuilding the temple.2 The prophet’s message motivating the people to resume work on the temple is recorded in Haggai 1:1–11.
1 Now the prophets, Haggai and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel who was over them.
