Zechariah was a Levite, probably born in Babylon (Nehemiah 12:1, Nehemiah 12:16). He was the son of Berechiah and the grandson of Iddo (Zechariah 1:1). Ezra identifies the prophet simply as the son of Iddo
to indicate that he was a member of the priestly family of which Iddo was the head (Nehemiah 12:16). Zechariah’s prophetic messages began sometime in October 520 BC with his final message being given in February 519 BC.1
1 Now the prophets, Haggai and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel who was over them.
