Proverbs 20:12 (ESV)

12 The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the LORD has made them both.

Schools and other institutions for the blind and deaf remind us not to take for granted our ability to see and hear. God should be thanked, because he is the one who gives ears that hear and eyes that see.

But this also means that God will call us to account for the ways in which we used the ears and eyes that he gave to us. He gave ears to us so that we will “hear,” which in Scripture is often synonymous with “obey.” He gave eyes to us so that we will “see,” which is often synonymous with “understand.” Jesus therefore told his believing disciples, “Blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear” (Matthew 13:16).

Lastly, this proverb should also remind us: when we do see and hear the truths of the gospel, we have nothing to boast about. It is God who gives us ears that truly hear and eyes that truly see (see Matthew 13:11; Ephesians 2:8).
