The Lord never shows partiality (1 Samuel 16:7; 2 Chronicles 19:7; Acts 10:34; Romans 2:11; Galatians 2:6; Ephesians 6:9; Colossians 3:25; 1 Peter 1:17). Therefore, he will not tolerate partiality in earthly judges, since they are called to administer his justice.
This proverb literally says, “To regard the face is not good.” The Code of Hammurabi, a very famous law book that already existed in the time of the Old Testament, gave different laws for the upper class, the middle class, and slaves. Such a practice is not tolerated by the Lord. Partiality in the justice system was one of the reasons why he sent his people into exile.
Let us always guard against partiality, also within the church (James 2:1–13). And let us thank God if we live in a country where everyone is equal before the law. This is a great blessing that can often be found in societies that have been impacted by God’s Word.
23 These also are sayings of the wise. Partiality in judging is not good.
