Pride and selfishness puts people in great danger with God because he hates pride and will destroy the proud on the day of judgment. This is made clear in Amos 6:7–11. The Lord hates the proud and they will be destroyed.
As a result of our sinful nature, we are all in the same boat as Israel. Naturally we are all proud and selfish, quick to forget God and the fact that he is the judge. However, we should remember what we were taught in Amos 5:1–17. Those who seek the Lord can live (Amos 5:4). If I put my confidence in God, God has found a way to forgive me so that it is not me who gets smashed into pieces (Amos 6:11) but Jesus at the cross, and I can be forgiven. I do not have to be sent away into exile (Amos 5:27) for an eternity in hell. I can enjoy peace with God.
The forgiveness of sins is a reality for all those who trust in Jesus Christ, but if our confidence is in ourselves, then Jesus’ death has no relevance for us. If we think we can treat God as our servant, someone who should provide us with everything we want but who we can ignore the rest of the time, well be warned. For you the day of the Lord will be darkness and not light (Amos 5:18), pitch-dark without a ray of brightness (Amos 5:20), gloom with no brightness.
7 Therefore they shall now be the first of those who go into exile, and the revelry of those who stretch themselves out shall pass away.”
