Gilead was an area east of the Jordan River occupied by Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh (Joshua 18:7). It had rich woodlands (Jeremiah 22:6; Jeremiah 50:19; Zechariah 10:10) and fertile land for grazing (Song of Solomon 4:1; Song of Solomon 6:5).1
