What were strongholds and how were they used?

Amos 3:10 (ESV)

10 “They do not know how to do right,” declares the LORD, “those who store up violence and robbery in their strongholds.”

Strongholds were multi‑storeyed structures that often formed part of a city’s defence system (Psalm 48:13; Psalm 122:7). They were also used as storehouses for loot taken in military raids.1
