Who are these two witnesses?

Revelation 11:3 (ESV)

3 And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.”

On the basis of the power they have according to Revelation 11:6, some would argue that these two are Elijah and Moses. Others, on the basis of their ascension described in Revelation 11:12, suggest that these two are Enoch and Elijah. Others in turn recommend that we think of Jeremiah and Elijah, or Peter and Paul, or John the Baptist and Jesus. The fact that the Lord leaves the identity of the two witnesses vague indicates that we are not to be absolute as to who these two are. Indeed, the point of the existence of these two witnesses is not their identity but is instead the legitimacy of what they report (there are two) and thus the responsibility of their hearers.
