The disciples of Jesus did not keep the fasting days of the disciples of John the Baptist and the Pharisees. Jesus shows that fasting here is fully focused on where the bridegroom is. The disciples’ rhythm of feasting and fasting is determined from now on by the memorable deeds of Jesus. That is why Jesus’ appearance signifies a new feast calendar and another rhythm of feasting and expectation.1
20 The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.
