From heaven this dragon “was thrown down to the earth.” Of the two parts of God’s creation (Genesis 1:1), Satan was exiled from heaven and so limited to the earth. The earth was the portion of his creation that God had given to mankind (Psalm 115:16). In coming verses we will read of the consequence for humanity of the dragon being thrown to the earth. For now it is sufficient to envision in our minds the tangle of legs and heads of the dragon tossed to the ground. The creature is humiliated, embarrassed, defeated.
9 And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
