John produces the name in two languages: “His name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he is called Apollyon.” The Hebrew term Abaddon means destruction; it occurs several times in the Old Testament (Job 26:6; Job 28:22; Job 31:12; Psalm 88:11; Proverbs 15:11; Proverbs 27:20) in connection with the realm of the dead. The Greek word Apollyon is a name derived from the verb for to destroy and means “the Destroyer.” This king of the abyss is clearly the opposite of the Lamb, the Saviour.
11 They have as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he is called Apollyon.
