Responding to the withdrawal of the Lord in Hosea 6:1-3

Hosea 6:4–6 (ESV)

4 What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes early away.

Apparently, the people react very positively. They sing a sort of song of penance and say: we are returning to the Lord! And they trust that it will all work out. Beautiful words. The only question is: is this genuine? Is this serious? How much depth is there in this confession of guilt? It all seems very pious, but let us not celebrate too soon.
