Preaching and the Holy Spirit

1 Thessalonians 1:5 (ESV)

5 because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.

We must remember that the Word without the power of the Spirit can accomplish nothing. Unless the Spirit of God, in his sovereign power, breathes life into our proclamation, our preaching will accomplish nothing. This reminds us of the need for prayer and continual dependence on God to use the message of the gospel actually to change peoples’ hearts and minds, so that they receive the gospel not as myth or ancient history, but as the very Word of God (see 1 Thessalonians 2:13).
