1. 1 Thessalonians 2:8 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why is Paul referring to the gospel of God?

1 Thessalonians 2:8 (ESV)

8 So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.

Paul’s main purpose in coming to Thessalonica was to share the gospel of God. The purpose of this entire section (1 Thessalonians 2:1–12) is to affirm the Thessalonian believers’ conviction that the message they had heard from Paul and his coworkers did indeed come from God. It is therefore appropriate for Paul to remind them of this reality by qualifying the word gospel with the phrase of God at this point.
