The Levites did not receive an inheritance because they were to be supported by the tithes and offerings presented by the other tribes (see Deuteronomy 18:1–5; Numbers 18:20–32) together with some small portions of land (Joshua 14:4) and cities (Joshua 21:1–45). This setup was meant to demonstrate that the true inheritance of the Levites and thus all God’s people was found in God himself (see Psalm 142:5; Psalm 73:26).
3 For Moses had given an inheritance to the two and one-half tribes beyond the Jordan, but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.
