Caleb is referring to the promises that God made to him and Joshua in Numbers 14:24 and Numbers 14:30. Deuteronomy 1:36 also records the promise that the Lord made through Moses. His inheritance is mentioned on three occasions (Joshua 14:6–15; Joshua 15:13–19; Judges 1:12–15), highlighting his prominent status in Israel.1 Throughout this chapter Caleb is presented as an example of the faithful leader who is totally loyal to the Lord which is why he is also rewarded with the first inheritance in the Promised Land.2
