After having countered the Corinthians’ abuse of two popular sayings (1 Corinthians 6:12–14), Paul offers three further considerations. These are given in an accusatory way, in the form of three questions that begin with the words, Do you not know…?
(1 Corinthians 6:15–16, 1 Corinthians 6:19).
With the first question, Paul reminds the Corinthians of a truth that they have certainly been taught, and to which he will return in chapter 12. This is, namely, that the church is the body of Christ.
A person cannot be joined to the body of Christ and to the body of a prostitute at the same time. When a church member joins himself to a prostitute, he is in effect severing himself from Christ (the Greek word, which the ESV renders as take,
normally implies that something is taken away).
15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never!
