1 Corinthians 9:3 (ESV)

3 This is my defense to those who would examine me.

In 1 Corinthians 9:3–12 Paul discusses his own conduct as an apostle. He calls this discussion a defense to those who would examine him. Here he is not referring to those who deny his apostleship (since the Corinthians themselves cannot deny it, 1 Corinthians 9:2). Rather, he is referring to those in their midst who are criticizing his actions (see further 1 Corinthians 4:3–5).
