1. Obadiah 1:15 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

When would the day of the LORD come?

Obadiah 1:15 (ESV)

15 For the day of the LORD is near upon all the nations. As you have done, it shall be done to you; your deeds shall return on your own head.

Obadiah 1:15–18 makes it clear that there will come a day when all of God’s enemies are completely destroyed. Though it might appear as if people can ignore and hate God today and get away with it, there will come a day when God intervenes to destroy his enemies.

This vision was partially fulfilled in 553 BC, when the Edomites were invaded and destroyed by Nabonidus, king of Babylon.

Ultimately, this promise will be fulfilled not with the destruction of human empires and kingdoms here on earth, but when Jesus Christ returns in glory as the judge from heaven. He will cast all his enemies into everlasting condemnation (hell), but he will take all of his chosen ones to himself into heavenly joy and glory.
