John 1:1–18 (ESV)

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John's prologue (John 1:1–18) summarizes how the Word that was with God in the very beginning came into the sphere of time, history, and tangibility—in other words, how the Son of God was sent into the world to become the Jesus of history, so that the glory and grace of God might be uniquely and perfectly disclosed. The rest of the book is an expansion of this theme.1
