  2. Exposition

What is significant of God giving someone a name?

2 Samuel 12:25 (ESV)

25 and sent a message by Nathan the prophet. So he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD.

When God gave people in the Bible a name, it signified a new moment in their life and in the history of redemption. It means that they are called to a new destiny and mission. Abram became Abraham. God made him a father of a multitude of nations (Genesis 17:5). Jacob became Israel. Israel is the one who trusts in the power of the Lord (Genesis 32:27–28). The son of David was called Solomon because his mission was to bring peace to God’s people. And the Lord also gave him the name Jedidiah, the Beloved, which means that he was also the son of God’s choice and delight.
