1. Deuteronomy 17:14–20 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Was David a king according to God’s law for the kings in Deuteronomy 17?

Deuteronomy 17:14–20 (ESV)

14 “When you come to the land that the LORD your God is giving you, and you possess it and dwell in it and then say, ‘I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are around me,’

David was the man who served the Lord with all his heart. Everyone knows that David was not perfect, but he served the Lord wholeheartedly. The Lord calls David a model and example when He addresses Solomon (see 1 Kings 3:14 and 1 Kings 9:4). David was truly devoted to God. He trusted the Lord and he did not trust in the power of horses. See, for example, 2 Samuel 8:4 and Psalm 20:7 where he sings: “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.”
