Numbers 27:1–11 describes what happened in the desert where the Lord commanded Moses to give the daughters of Zelophedad an inheritance. Since Zelophedad did not have a male heir, there was a risk that his clan would have no inheritance in the land. Normally the inheritance would pass through the male and not the female descendants. Knowing this, Zelophedad's daughters approached Moses and now they also approached Joshua in order to ensure that the promise made by Moses is adhered to. It is not clear if they each received a portion or if the portion of their father was divided between them.
4 They approached Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the leaders and said, “The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance along with our brothers.” So according to the mouth of the LORD he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father.
