When it comes to the inheritance of Joseph, his inheritance is divided between his two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh. They were adopted by Jacob as his own which is why each of them get their own separate portion of land. Moreover, they are both given really nice pieces of land. Looking at a map of their territory we can see that their combined inheritance is much bigger than any other tribe except maybe for Judah. What’s more, they had also been given some of the best and most fertile land. Eastern Manasseh included a region known as Bashan which would become famous for its agriculture.
But it is not only with land that God provided; the people of Joseph were numerous and strong (Joshua 17:14). In keeping with the promise made by Jacob on his death bed (Genesis 49:22–26), God had blessed them with the blessings of the breast and the womb.
That means when it came to fighting, these two tribes did not really have much to fear from the remaining Canaanites. They had the numbers to crush them and take over their portion of the land. So it is a great piece of territory that this tribe had been given, a double portion. The lot had fallen very favourably for the sons of Joseph.
1 The allotment of the people of Joseph went from the Jordan by Jericho, east of the waters of Jericho, into the wilderness, going up from Jericho into the hill country to Bethel.
