A righteous man must sometimes enter into strife as he contends earnestly for the faith (Jude 1:3), but he does not love such strife. Yet those who love sin actually enjoy fighting and inflicting pain on others. These people serve their father, the devil, who is a liar, a murderer, and who is also exceedingly proud. Therefore, this verse adds an observation on pride. The man who exalts his door (who gives the appearance that only the high and mighty are allowed to come to him), unknowingly seeks destruction. Satan set his heart on a position higher than he deserved, and was cast down accordingly (Isaiah 14:13–17). He continues to inspire others to follow his example. Let us resist him by encouraging humility and the peaceable fruit of righteousness.
19 Whoever loves transgression loves strife; he who makes his door high seeks destruction.
