1 Corinthians 12:5 (ESV)

5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;

Christ ascended and entered heaven as the Lord, the victorious King. His Father gave him the Spirit to bestow on his people (see John 15:26; Ephesians 4:7–16).

Here the workings of the Spirit are described as forms of service (diakoniai). Through this term the purpose of the Spirit’s workings is highlighted. They are given to serve and edify the church (see also Ephesians 4:7–16).

The term service ties in well with the title Lord. Christ is the Lord and Master of the church, and his gifts are to be used in his and his church’s service.
